Newton's Nostalgia Wine & Spirits will be the backdrop to a fun new fundraiser supporting United Way of Jasper County on May 23.
Nostalgia owner Dan Nieland came up with the idea to have local celebrities vie for the title of Champion in a Celebrity Bartender Challenge. Twelve local celebriteis/United Way supporters were tapped to spend one evening taking and delivering orders, mingling with guests and trying to raise the most tips. The celebrity with the most tips wins the coveted bragging rights and some fun prizes, and United Way of Jasper County receives all the tips proceeds. Volunteers include Alida Anderson, Mandy Barkley, Randy Ervin, Mark Hallam, Sarah Jorges, Chantelle Lundberg, Brett Lundberg, Brad Magg, Travis Padget, Sean Roberts, Kelly Sorenson and Andy Swedenhjelm. Each celeb will take a half hour shift to try and woo patrons into giving big tips. Along with the celebrity bartenders, UWJC Executive Director Jessica Lowe Vokes will be performing some fun magic tricks. Also there will be food, music and a raffle with some great prizes up for grabs. Doors open at 5 p.m. and celebrity fun begins at 5:30 p.m. on May 23 at Nostalgia Wine & Spririts, 109 N. 2nd Ave. E. in Newton. |

United Way of Jasper County is partnering with The IOWA Foundation and football superstars Tavian Banks, Tim Dwight and Rodney Filer to offer for the first time the TnT Football Camp in Newton.
The camp will welcome Jasper County boys and girls in 3rd-8th grades on June 6 for an evening of football fundamentals, nutrition education and the importance of staying mentally healthy. Former Hawkeye and Newton Cardinal Nick Easley, and former professional football player and coach Kahil Carter, along with Newton Cardinal football coaching staff and players also will be on hand to work with the campers. In conjunction with the event, United Way of Jasper County will be hosting a wellness fair to allow families access to vital information about organizations and programs serving the people of Jasper County. (Example of programs: Food Assistance, Summer Camps, Literacy, Volunteer Opportunities, etc.) United Way is broadening our programming to reach more Jasper County residents with opportunities to focus on health, education and financial stability. The partnership with The IOWA Foundation and The TnT Camp is a perfect event to combine fun and education for Jasper County residents. Cost per child is $25 and includes a camp cinch bag and T-shirt. Scholarships will be available for individuals who cannot be able to afford the registration fee.
